October 2026 Preview: What's Coming Near NAS Jacksonville and Orange Park

The busiest weekend of October on this side of the river is October 17–18, when Naval Air Station Jacksonville opens its gates for the air show and rooms from Argyle down to Fleming Island fill. The second thing worth knowing about the month is a subtraction: the Jaguars play both of their October home games in London, so EverBank sits dark until November.

That's October 2026 in two sentences. Here's the longer version, written on the last day of September, with the dates we can confirm, one we can't, and a November deadline worth acting on while it's still October.

The air show is the weekend to book first, and it costs nothing to attend

The NAS Jacksonville Air Show runs Saturday and Sunday, October 17–18. Admission is free, parking is free, and there are no tickets to buy or print. Gates open at 9 a.m. and the flying starts at 11 a.m. both days.

Two logistics details do more work than anything else on the day. The first is identification: everyone 18 or older needs a REAL ID to clear the gate. If your driver's license isn't REAL ID compliant, sort that out in the next two weeks rather than in a car queue on Saturday morning. The second is your approach. Traffic coming from the south, which is everyone driving up from Orange Park, is directed to the Yorktown (Main) Gate. Knowing which gate you want before you leave is the difference between a smooth morning and a very slow one.

There's also a practice show on Friday, October 16, and it's worth a line here because some of our guests are ID-card holders. That day is open to base-access holders and their guests only. If that's you, Friday is the quieter version of the same sky.

The short version from the front desk is that we're about fifteen minutes from the main gate, our parking is free, and on a weekend when the whole region's traffic is pointed at one stretch of the Westside, leaving your car at the hotel is worth more than it sounds.

Football leaves town for the month

October is when the Jaguars go abroad. The two games listed as home games are both being played in England: Sunday, October 11 against the Philadelphia Eagles at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, then Sunday, October 18 against the Houston Texans at Wembley Stadium. A bye week follows. The next time football happens at EverBank is Sunday, November 1 against the Indianapolis Colts.

We're not printing kickoff times, in October or anywhere else on this blog. NFL Sunday games are subject to flex scheduling, and a time we published on September 30 is a time you'd have to re-check anyway. The team's schedule page is the source.

The reason behind the trip is the same renovation story that shrank the stadium this season. The team has described the two London games as a "critical and opportune two-week, in-season construction window," which is a polite way of saying the building gets more done with nobody in it. What it means for a visitor is simple. If you were planning an October trip around a game at EverBank, there isn't one. Move it to November 1 or come for the air show instead.

One coincidence in the calendar is worth flagging: October 18 is both air show Sunday and a London kickoff morning. The Texans game plays out on Eastern-time breakfast hours while the flight line is warming up across the river. If you want both, that's a genuinely doable day. Just don't plan on catching the end of the game and still making the 9 a.m. gates.

Two dates at the Thrasher-Horne, one of them the same night as the show

The performing arts hall on the St. Johns River State College campus at 2900 Thrasher Horne Avenue has two October dates on the board:

• Saturday, October 17: Neil Forever
• October 22: Pete the Cat, the family show of the two

The October 17 date is the interesting one, because it lands on air show Saturday. An entire day outdoors watching aircraft, then a concert a few minutes from where you're sleeping, is a better Saturday than most people put together on purpose. Showtimes and tickets are on the center's site, and we'd rather you check them there than trust a number we typed three weeks out.

The market runs, but October is the month it wanders

The Orange Park Farmers' & Arts Market keeps its usual pattern in the fall: first and third Sundays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Town Hall Park, 2042 Park Avenue. The market's own site notes that October is one of two months in the season with exceptions "for other town events," which is exactly the sort of caveat that ruins a Sunday morning if you ignore it. So we're not printing October dates. The festival nobody has dated yet

The Town of Orange Park Fall Festival is the biggest civic event in town, and as of today its 2026 date has not been announced. Not on the festival's site, not on its events listing, not on the Town's calendar. We looked. We're not going to split the difference and tell you it's probably mid-October, because a guess printed here becomes somebody's flight booking.

What we can tell you is what the festival is, because that part is documented. Admission is free. There are over 200 artists and vendors, roughly thirty of them food vendors, two stages running regional and local acts, and a Kids Zone with inflatables. It bills itself as Clay County's oldest and largest arts and crafts festival, and it takes place at 2042 Park Avenue.

You may have noticed that's the same address as the farmers' market. We're not going to claim that's the reason the market lists October exceptions, since neither organization says so. The weather turns, and it turns hard

If you've only been here in summer, October is a different state. NOAA's 1991–2020 climate normals for Jacksonville International put October's average high at 80.9°F and the average low at 61.5°F, with 4.03 inches of rain across about 8 days. Compare that to September's 87.2°F high and 70.5°F low across 12.4 rainy days and you can see the whole shift. The clearest number is the count of 90-degree days: 9.0 in a normal September, 1.1 in a normal October.

Practically, that means the outdoor half of your trip stops needing to happen before 11 a.m. An air show that runs from mid-morning into the afternoon is a much more pleasant proposition in the third week of October than it would have been in August.

Pack for warm days and cool mornings. Shorts still work at 80.9°F. A layer for a 61.5-degree sunrise is the thing northern visitors leave at home and then wish they hadn't. Sun protection stays on the list regardless, because pleasant is not the same as mild and the UV here doesn't read the calendar. And the Atlantic hurricane season runs through November 30, so October is inside the window even if it's well past the peak. That's a planning posture, not a forecast: read the cancellation terms on the rate you book, and give yourself margin on the parts of the trip that can't move. One November deadline that lands inside October

The Greater Jacksonville Agricultural Fair runs November 5–15, 2026, and this year it moves to a new site: 13601 Normandy Boulevard, which puts it on the Westside, our side of the river, instead of downtown.

The reason it belongs in an October preview is the ticket window. Early-bird pricing runs September 1 through November 4: adults $10, children $5, seniors $5, and a Mega Pass at $25 that includes unlimited mechanical rides. Once the gates open on November 5, the same admission is $15 for adults and $10 for children and seniors. If you already know you're going, buying in October saves real money per head, and a family of four doing rides is the case where it stops being trivial. Booking notes for the month

The air show weekend is the one to lock down. October 16–18 is the single biggest demand weekend of the fall on this side of Jacksonville, and it doesn't fill gradually. If those dates are your dates, book the room now and worry about the rest of the itinerary later.

The rest of October is unusually open. With no home games and no stadium traffic, the middle weeks of the month are as calm as this side of the river gets in the fall. Build the day around the free stuff. Free admission and parking at the air show, free breakfast here before you go, free parking while you're gone, and a pool that's still perfectly usable in an 80-degree October. October is the month this part of Florida is actually built for, and this year the calendar cooperated: one enormous free weekend, a couple of nights at the Thrasher-Horne, and a stadium too busy being rebuilt to compete for your Sunday.
