10 Things to Do Near NAS Jacksonville

One of the quiet advantages of staying in Orange Park is how much sits within a short drive. You're on the Westside, wrapped by I-295, which means the zoo up north, downtown across the river, and the day trips to the south are all reachable without a marathon in the car.

Whether you're here visiting Naval Air Station Jacksonville and have an afternoon to fill, or you're building a whole weekend around the area, here are ten things worth doing — ordered roughly from closest to farthest, with honest notes on each.

1. Go-karts and mini-golf at Adventure Landing

The easiest restless-kid fix near the hotel. Adventure Landing on Blanding Boulevard is about ten minutes away and packs go-karts, mini-golf, batting cages, laser tag, and a big arcade into one spot. You can pay per attraction or grab an all-day wristband. It's not fancy, but it reliably burns off an afternoon — and it's close.

2. A show at the Thrasher-Horne Center

Right in Orange Park, on the St. Johns River State College campus, the Thrasher-Horne Center is Clay County's main stage. Touring Broadway productions, concerts, comedy, and family shows all cycle through a proper theater about ten minutes from the hotel. Check the calendar before your trip — if the timing lines up, it's a great evening that most visitors never think to look for.

3. The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens

Worth building a morning around. The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens is consistently one of the region's best family attractions — a walk-through Africa loop, elephants, big cats, splash grounds for the kids, and gardens along the river. It's about 25 minutes northeast via I-295. Plan on three to five hours, and go early in summer, when the animals are livelier and the heat hasn't set in.

4. Indoor karting at Autobahn Indoor Speedway

When the Florida afternoon turns to rain or you just want out of the heat, Autobahn Indoor Speedway runs fast European-style electric go-karts on a banked indoor track. It's good for teens and adults especially — arrive and drive, or book a race. About 20 minutes from Orange Park, and a reliable rainy-day answer.

5. The Riverside Arts Market

A Saturday ritual. The Riverside Arts Market sets up under the Fuller Warren Bridge along the St. Johns, with local artists, farm stands, food trucks, and live music. It's free to wander and one of the best low-cost afternoons in the city. Go in the morning for the best parking and some shade. It's about 15 minutes from the hotel.

6. Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary

Something different: a nonprofit sanctuary on the Northside that gives rescued tigers, lions, cougars, and leopards a permanent home. The evening Night Feeding tours are the ones to book — the cats are most active, and it's genuinely memorable. Check the limited hours before you go; it's about 25 minutes away.

7. Tree Hill Nature Center

For an easy dose of the outdoors without a long drive, Tree Hill Nature Center packs 50 acres of trails, boardwalks, and native-animal exhibits into the middle of the city. It's a kid-friendly hour or two, good for burning off energy before a long travel day. About 25 minutes east of the hotel.

8. The Southbank Riverwalk and MOSH

Downtown, the Southbank Riverwalk gives you the Jacksonville skyline across the water and an easy stroll along the St. Johns. Anchor it with the Museum of Science and History (MOSH), a solid indoor option that's especially clutch on a hot or rainy afternoon. It's about 15 to 20 minutes from Orange Park, over the river.

9. The Atlantic beaches

Jacksonville's beaches — Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach, and Atlantic Beach — are about 40 minutes east. Jacksonville Beach is the liveliest, with a pier, restaurants, and easy parking; Atlantic Beach is quieter. Go in the morning, claim your sand, and clear out by early afternoon when the heat and crowds peak. It's a longer drive than the rest of this list, but it's the ocean.

10. A day trip to St. Augustine

If you've got a full free day, spend it in St. Augustine, under an hour south down I-95. It's the oldest continuously occupied European-founded city in the country — a Spanish stone fort on the bay, a walkable historic district of narrow streets and old architecture, and enough small museums, shops, and ice cream to fill a day. It's the best day trip in the region, and it's right there.

Honorable mentions

A few more worth knowing about: Whitey's Fish Camp on Doctors Lake is as much a destination as a dinner (we wrote it up here); the shopping at Oakleaf Town Center and Orange Park Mall covers anything you forgot to pack; and St. Johns Town Center across the river is the big open-air shopping-and-dining complex if you want to make an afternoon of it.

If you only have one afternoon

Short on time? Match the pick to who you're with. Families with young kids get the most out of Adventure Landing — it's ten minutes away, and go-karts and mini-golf need no planning. If the group skews older or it's raining, Autobahn Indoor Speedway is the indoor version of the same energy. Couples or anyone who wants a slower pace should aim for a Saturday and the Riverside Arts Market, then a wander along the river. And if the weather's perfect and you don't mind the drive, the zoo is the single best use of a half day in the area — just go early.

Whatever you choose, you're never far from home base. Orange Park's position off I-295 means most of this list is a 25-minute drive or less, so even a spontaneous afternoon doesn't eat your whole day in the car.

Planning by geography

The trick to enjoying any of this is to stop thinking of Jacksonville as one place. It's enormous, and it's split by the St. Johns River. Trying to hit the zoo, the beach, and downtown in a single afternoon means spending that afternoon on I-295 and the Buckman Bridge.

Group your outings instead. Most of this list clusters into three easy buckets from Orange Park: close to home (Adventure Landing, the Thrasher-Horne Center, and dinner in Oakleaf or at Whitey's); across the river (the zoo up north, the Riverside Arts Market and Riverwalk downtown, Autobahn and Catty Shack on the way); and the day trips (the beaches east, St. Augustine south). Pick one bucket per outing and you'll spend your time at the destinations instead of between them.

Timing helps, too. Mornings are for the outdoor stuff — the zoo, the beach, St. Augustine's streets — before the heat and the crowds arrive. Save the indoor options for the afternoon, when a summer storm is most likely to roll through anyway. A little planning turns a sprawling city into a very manageable weekend.
